Over 70% of George Hurst & Sons turnover is spent with suppliers and subcontractors. The environmental and social impact of our supply chain therefore plays a key part in the overall sustainability of our business, the services we supply and the buildings we construct. Our supply chain policy is based on working in partnership with suppliers, engaging them on fair terms and conditions and delivering mutual objectives.

We operate a subcontractor approval process whereby different grades of subcontractor and key suppliers are classified and approved according to their competence. The system we use to classify contractors is a traffic light system. The Green Category includes subcontractors who have complied with all of the requirements set by our approval questionnaire and who have a proven track record of working with us. We assess their performance at the end of a project by asking our Site Manager to complete a Subcontractor Feedback Form. Subcontractors who have received a below average score within the past year but who would otherwise be categorised as Green are placed into Amber Category and a lessons-learned approach is carried out to prevent recurrence of the problem. The Amber Category also includes subcontractors who are named as a preferred subcontractor / supplier by the Client in the Contract.
