George Hurst & Sons Limited has a Health & Safety Policy which ensures full compliance with legal requirements and which promotes best practice in everything we do so that we are able to exceed minimum standards.

Our Health & Safety Policy is both relevant and practical and is independently reviewed on a regular basis to stay abreast of any changes in legislation and approved codes of practice.

We employ a full-time Health & Safety Manager, Nigel Bramhall, who reports directly to the Directors.  He carries out monthly site audits on all sites to identify any risks and monitor compliance.  Each site is audited by scoring Health & Safety performance in four separate categories as follows;

1.Access and Scaffolding
2.Transport and Machinery
3.Personal Risks and Welfare
4.Environment and Health

The site scores and other matters arising from the audits are then reviewed at weekly safety meetings with the Contracts Director and positive actions are then agreed with the Site Managers to minimise or eradicate any identified risks.

In the autumn of 2008 we embarked on a driver-safety campaign to improve the safety and driving standards of all our employees.  This comprised a four-point plan beginning with a risk assessment on all employees to identify any driver-training needs.  Twenty people were identified as being in the mid to high risk driving category and completed a half day driver training course in 2009.  In addition, all drivers have been compelled to agree to and sign a driver policy which promotes the highest standards.  We believe that this approach demonstrates our commitment to safety for all persons employed or affected by our activities.
